Mango leaves may be used for anti-aging, skin whitening products - study

Researchers have discovered that extracts of local mango leaves can be used as ingredients in cosmetics, particularly anti-aging and skin whitening products, according to a report of Katrina Son on "State of the Nation" on Wednesday.

Researchers at the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños found that the mango leaves have a high amount of antioxidants.

Arsenia Sapin, one of the researchers, said the study looked into the presence of polyphenolic in local mango leaves, along with the antioxidant capacity and inhibitory effect against elastase and tyrosinase or the enzymes that cause aging and darkening of skin.

Sapin said the results of the study could provide consumers with effective natural ingredients that can be used to make cosmetic products safe.

Meanwhile, some skin experts said the research will have to undergo further studies.

"Mas mataas ang effect na nakita nitong UPLB pero siyempre kailangan pag-aralan pa rin 'yan," Dr. Manny Calayan said.

Consumers were also excited for the outcome of the study.

"I will consult a doctor kung okay ba 'yon sa skin type ko and all pero since may research na lumabas, I'm excited sa magiging resulta nito," said Rowell Mariano, a talent development professional. -- Ma. Angelica Garcia/BAP, GMA News
