62 volcanic quakes detected in Bulusan Volcano —PHIVOLCS

A total of 62 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon since May 7 as increased activity was observed in the volcano, state volcanologists said Monday.

"The increased seismic activity and short-term ground deformation are likely caused by shallow hydrothermal processes beneath the edifice," said PHIVOLCS in its 7 p.m. Bulusan Volcano advisory.

PHIVOLCS also reported that "only very weak to weak emission of white steam-laden plumes" at the southeast vents of Bulusan Volcano.

The volcano is still under Alert Level 0 or "normal state" but PHIVOLCS warned that it could change if increased activity continues.

"Since hydrothermal processes are underway beneath the volcano, there are increased chances of steam-driven or phreatic eruptions from its active vents," PHIVOLCS added.

PHIVOLCS also advised local government units and its constituents to prevent entry into the  4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).

"Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft," it added.—Consuelo Marquez/LDF, GMA News
