Supermoon to rise on Tuesday –PAGASA

A supermoon will light up the night sky on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said.

According to PAGASA, the supermoon will reach its peak from 11:22 p.m. to 11:32 p.m.

The supermoon will have a perigee distance of 357,378 kilometers away from the Earth.

"The closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its elliptic orbit, resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth," the weather bureau said.

NASA said a supermoon can be 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than a full moon in its apogee, or its farthest point to the Earth.

PAGASA said the term supermoon is astrological in origin and has no precise astronomical definition.

"It was popularized by astrologer Richard Nolle. The real association of the Moon with both oceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the supermoon phenomenon may be associated with an increased risk of events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but no such link has been found," PAGASA added. — DVM, GMA News
