PAGASA raises Signal No. 1 over NCR, 20 other areas due to Pepito


The weather bureau PAGASA has raised Signal No. 1 over Metro Manila and several other areas on Monday night as Tropical Depression Pepito continued to move west-northwestward.

In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the cyclone was last seen 305 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Signal No. 1 was raised over the following areas:

  1. Isabela
  2. Quirino
  3. Nueva Vizcaya
  4. Kalinga
  5. Mountain Province
  6. Ifugao
  7. Benguet
  8. La Union
  9. Pangasinan
  10. Aurora
  11. Nueva Ecija
  12. Tarlac
  13. Zambales
  14. Bulacan
  15. Pampanga
  16. Bataan
  17. Metro Manila
  18. Rizal
  19. Northern portion of Quezon (General Nakar, Infanta, Real) including Polillo Islands
  20. Extreme northern portion of Camarines Norte (Vinzons)
  21. Catanduanes

The state weather bureau said the wind is expected to cause “very light or no damage” to low-risk structures, “light to medium” damage to high risk structures, slight damage to makeshift structures and houses made of light materials, and significant damage to rice crops in the flowering stage.

PAGASA added that “strong to near gale” high winds will prevail in areas under Signal No. 1 within 36 hours.

Track and intensity outlook

PAGASA said Pepito will likely make landfall over the coast of the Aurora-Isabela area on Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.

The cyclone may also reach the tropical storm category before it makes landfall.

By Tuesday evening, Pepito will be 45 kilometers south-southwest of Casiguran, Aurora.

By Wednesday evening, it will be 350 kilometers west of Dagupan City, Pangasinan.

By Thursday evening, the cyclone will be outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility or 540 kilometers west of Dagupan.

Weather outlook

PAGASA said Pepito will bring moderate to heavy rains over the Bicol Region, Northern Samar, Quezon, Aurora, Cagayan, and Isabela.

Meanwhile, light to moderate with at times heavy rains should be expected over Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon, the Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Samar, Eastern Samar, Romblon, and Marinduque.
