Magnitude 5 earthquake hits Surigao del Norte

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Surigao del Norte before dawn on Tuesday.

The tectonic earthquake occurred at 3:21 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The epicenter was at 09.80°N, 126.24°E - 021 km N 76° E of Dapa (Surigao Del Norte).

The quake’s depth of focus was 55 km.

Intensity IV was felt in General Luna, Burgos, and Socorro in Surigao del Norte, as well as in San Jose, Dinagat Islands.

Intensity III was felt in Surigao City and in Dapa, Surigao del Norte.

Intensity II meanwhile was felt in Carrascal and Tubod in Surigao del Sur, and in Loreto, Dinagat Islands.

PHIVOLCS said aftershocks may be expected.
