La Salle students make straws from banana peels
A group of students is doing their share in helping arrest the impact of climate change by making straws out of banana peels as substitute for the harmful plastics.
According to MJ Geronimo's report on Stand for Truth on Friday, senior high school students from the De La Salle University-Dasmariñas made use of the fiber found in Saba bananas.
"The idea is to make the ideal substitute for plastic. Ang goal namin is to make it more affordable, mas easily accessible," John Montuya, the laboratory supervisor, said.
The Philippines placed third as the biggest source of plastic found in seas, according to a 2015 report by the Ocean Conservancy Charity and McKinsey Center for Business and Environment.
"We need to constantly think, and ignore what others say na hindi po gagana kasi as long as desidido po kayo and may commitment po, kayang-kaya po iyan paganahin," Sherard Ballon, a student, said.
