Responsible digital citizenship now part of K-12 curriculum

Students in public or private schools will soon learn more about responsible online behavior in class. The Department of Education (DepEd) partnered with Globe recently to integrate the company’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) in the K-12 curriculum. The collaboration seeks to bolster DepEd’s existing modules about digital literacy.

“Globe created a four-part module series on responsible online behavior and it is something we are sharing with DepEd today,” said Miguel Bermundo, Director of Globe Citizenship and Advocacy Marketing during the National Summit on Digital Citizenship and Responsibility (NSDCR) held in Century Park Manila Hotel recently.

Globe’s DTP covers Cyber Security and Safety, Etiquette and Responsibility, Discernment, and Empowerment. The four-part course was rolled out during the National Summit on Digital Citizenship and Responsibility (NSDCR) held in Century Park Manila Hotel this month.

Aside from that, a workshop was also conducted during the 5-day summit to help DepEd’s experts on curriculum localize and customize the modules according to various regions across the nation.

“We all know that in this time of technology and information, technology should be maximized not only as a tool for learning but as a tool for teaching,” stressed Usec. Tonisito M.C. Umali, Esq., DepEd Undersecretary for Legislative Liaison Office, External Partnerships Service and School Sports.

The internet offers countless educational benefits. It, however, also exposes young and old users to threats online. A poll released by UNICEF recently revealed more than a third of youth in 30 countries have been a victim of cyber bullying.

“By integrating [Globe’s DTP] in the delivery of curriculum targets, all students can better learn how to be conscious of their personal security and well-being when online and eventually, become responsible internet user,” said DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones.

Over 400 DepEd Experts and teachers from across the country, including representatives from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), participated in the summit. Globe updated the participants on the state and issues affecting digital technologies as well as coached them on presenting the modules.  Teaching tools were also provided. DTP underscores Globe’s commitment of creating responsible digital citizens by educating public and private students on proper online behavior. Since its launch in 2016, the program benefitted 4,962 students across the country and counting.
