Two phreatic eruptions recorded on Mayon on Monday
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday morning recorded two phreatic eruptions on Mayon Volcano.
Interviewed on Dobol B sa News TV, Phivolcs officer-in-charge Renato Solidum said the two phreatic eruptions took place at 7:59 a.m. and 8:04 a.m.
"Itong phreatic eruption nasa Alert Level 2 siya. Mainit pa yung ilalim ng bulkan at sa tingin namin meron paakyat na magma sa ilalim," he said.
According to Phivolcs' website, Alert Level 2 means Mayon Volcano "is at a moderate level of unrest."
Solidum said the spewed ash went as high as 500 meters and 300 meters, respectively.
"Umaabot ng kalahating kilometro yung una yung taas ng pag-itsa ng usok, then 300 meters yung sumunod. So hindi po ito ganun kalakas," he said.
For the meantime, Solidum said they are observing Mayon Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the country, for further activities.
"Hindi pa nagkaroon ng estimation ng activity ng Mayon, pero nakikita namin na namamaga siya,” he said, adding residents are safe as long as they are not within the permanent danger zone.
"Hindi naman delikado kung wala naman sa permanent danger zone ang mga tao,” Solidum said. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
