236 DOST scholars graduate with honors

Three summa cum laude, 44 magna cum laude, 134 cum laude, an honorable mention, and four academic distinctions are among the 2015 harvest of the Department of Science and Technology.

There was even a scholar who graduated ahead of schedule, according to the DOST.

Greater harvests loom in the years ahead. Science Secretary Mario Montejo said the DOST has committed “to strengthen the impact of the scholarship program by expanding its coverage in the next years.”

“There is an increase in the number of municipalities represented from 1,295 in 2013 to 1,443 in 2014. The additional 148 municipalities represents an 11 percent increase within the period,” the Aquino Administration said in its 2016 proposed budget.

Next year, the national government intends to support 16,557 science scholars' undergraduate studies, 2,407 masteral students, and 794 doctoral aspirants.

Reviewing the results of past years, the proposed budget said that “(o)f the 1,736 scholars in the final year in college, 1,562 or 89.98 percent were able to graduate in 2013. In 2014 of the 1,236 scholars, a total of 1,102 or 89.16 percent were able to graduate.”

"Serve the people"

The scholars who graduated this last school year were honored last July 28, but the DOST news release was issued only on Monday, August 10.

“Ninety six (96) honorees from the national capital region and Region 4A attended the ceremony,” the DOST said.

Speaking on behalf of the honorees, Ernest Nathan Nogales, a BS Chemistry summa cum laude graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman rallied his batch of DOST scholar-graduates “to serve the people, not out of duty, but out of love.”

“If we think we will serve for just 5 years and (say) “that’s it, I’m free from the bond” (then) we’re completely missing the point...Don’t think about the 5 years. Don’t even think about the bond,” Nogales also said.

For her part, SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo urged the honorees “to maintain the excellence you’ve shown for most of your student life. Don’t be scared in going after big things. After all, that’s where DOST scholars are known for.”
