PAGASA installs new doppler radar in Iloilo

To help residents in Iloilo province better prepare for heavy rain, state weather agency PAGASA has revived its facility there, installing a new Doppler radar that can detect heavy rain.

PAGASA-Iloilo started tests on the new radar equipment Wednesday, GMA Iloilo's Charlene Belvis reported on Thursday.

"Ito real-time na display ng radar. Kung may bahagi na pula, posibleng heavy ang ulan, yan kasi yung indication," said PAGASA-Iloilo OIC Ronaldo Naragdao.

Such weather surveillance equipment is expected to benefit residents in the province, as it will allow PAGASA to get real-time information and issue appropriate weather advisories.

The advisories would include relevant information such as wind strength and volume of rainwater.

"Mahalaga ito sa pag-forecast ng weather at sa pag-track ng mga bagyo na pumapasok sa ating area of responsibility," Naragdao said.

PAGASA's Iloilo unit will be staffed by three weather forecasters. However, it is not expected to be fully operational until September.

The facility started operations in 2013 but discontnued operations due to the lack of personnel and equipment.

Meanwhile, the revived Iloilo office is expected to benefit residents who had become fearful of the heavy rain in past days.

In Oton town, residents in coastal areas are worried about floodwaters seeping into their houses.

"Hangin lang at ulan ang kinatatakutan ko dahil baka matumbahan ng kahoy ang bahay ko. Ano lang, pagdarasal na hindi sana dalhin ng malakas na hangin ang bahay. Nakasandal sa pader ang aking bahay," said resident Evangeline Bayona. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
