Pinoy kids bag nine gold medals in int'l math olympiad

Filipino pupils who represented the country at a mathematics Olympiad in Malaysia returned home Monday night with an impressive medal haul.

 

The 24 pupils figured prominently among 8,000 participants in last week's Olympiad, GMA News stringer Ariel Fernandez reported.

 

They represented the Philippines at the 2014 Malaysia International Mathematics Olympiad (MIMO) in Selangor, Malaysia.

 

According to the report, the Filipino students' haul included nine golds, nine silvers, and four bronzes.

 

Fernandez quoted teacher Rechilda Villame as saying they were happy because all the students brought home medals.

 

Aside from the medal haul, the Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines (MathDAP) said the students won overall champion and 10 trophies in the team contest.

 

The contest drew 816 contestants from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines.

The overall champion in the team contest’s upper primary division were Philippine Team A’s Dion Stephan Ong of Ateneo de Manila High School, Genrish Ng of St. Jude Catholic School, Eion Nikolai Chua of MGC New Life Christian Academy, who also won individual gold medals, and Albriz Moore Bagsic of Lilyrose School, who won a silver medal.

 

Other individual gold medalists are Maria Monica Manlises, St. Stephen’s High School; Shawn Darren Chua, MGC New Life Christian Academy; Rikka Grace Sombiro, Solomon Integrated School de Iloilo; Annika Angela Mei Tamayo, Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS; Frederick Ivan Michael Tan, Xavier School; and Patricia Angelica Tan, Chiang Kai Shek College.

 

Silver medalists included Krystal Lim Tiong Soon, Grace Christian College; Jose Lorenzo Abad, Colegio San Agustin-Makati; Leandro Martin Acla, Georgia International Academy; Kristin Angela Narag, Colegio San Agustin-Binan; Erin Nicole Blanche, Dee Hwa Liong Academy; David Kyle Picart, Sunshine International School; Janssen Reign Peña, Mother Goose Special School System and Noel Stephen Dequito, De la Salle University Integrated School-STC.

 

Bronze medalists included Ryan Christopher Deodores, Colegio San Agustin-Binan; Frelean Faith Engallado, Solomon Integrated School de Iloilo; Justin Tan, St. John’s Institute; and Celine Amanda Montales, Colegio San Agustin-Makati.
