NASA discovers Han Solo on Mercury!

This could give the planet Mercury a special place in the hearts of Star Wars fans.

A space probe launched by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has found what resembles an image of Han Solo frozen in carbonite on the surface of the planet.

"A portion of the terrain surrounding the northern margin of the Caloris basin hosts an elevated block in the shape of a certain carbonite-encased smuggler who can make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs," tech site Gizmodo cited a naughty quote from the scientists.

In the Star Wars universe, Han Solo best fits the description of a "smuggler who can make the Kessel Run."

Gizmodo added the photo, made public only last week, was captured as early as July 2011.

Yet, it noted Mercury's surface can throw up all kinds of surprises, with the block possibly a part of the original surface that predates the formation of Caloris.

Caloris was the material shaped by material ejected during the basin-forming event, it added.

"Of course, the scientists are chalking all this up to 'pareidolia,' the phenomenon in which humans frequently see other human-like shapes floating around space. But we know a scruffy-looking Nerfherder when we see one," Gizmodo said. — TJD, GMA News
