Why do geckos nest in houses? Kuya Kim explains

A house up for renovation in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental was discovered to be sheltering quite a number of geckos under its roof.

According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Thursday, the reptiles were found when a group of workers came to knock down the structure.

Some of them were spotted huddled together behind a backpack hanging on the wall.

"Na-shock po ako nun kasi nagkumpul-kumpulan sila," said Genielito Talaba, who uploaded a video of the geckos online.

The house belongs to his uncle, who asked him to renovate it.

Why are geckos occasionally seen nesting in people's homes? Kuya Kim explained that this is because lights attract insects, their primary food, and the water supply allow them to drink and moisturize their skin.

Some people are afraid of geckos, but they are known to be gentle animals.

"Wala naman silang kamandag pero masakit silang mangagat," Jazz Ong, a herpetologist, said about the reptiles.

She also said they help in pest control, due to their steady diet of insects.

Geckos are known for their ability to stick on surfaces. This is due to hairlike structure in their legs called setae.

However, there are places that they don't stick to properly, such as wet, oily, and dusty surfaces as well as non-stick kitchenware.

As for the house in Ozamiz, Genielito waited for the geckos leave before resuming on the renovation work.

"Binigyan po namin sila ng time sir na umalis para 'di po sila masaktan 'pag giba namin sa bahay," he said.
