GMA Integrated News Digidokyu episode on plastics wins at DOST's Bantog Awards

GMA Integrated News DigiDokyu reporter Lilian B. Tiburcio receives the Bantog Award for Best Science and Technology Investigative Story (Audio-Visual)

The GMA Integrated News Digidokyu episode of the Philippine plastic problem just won the Best Science and Technology Investigative Story (Audio-Visual) trophy at DOST's Bantog Awards, held at the PICC in Pasay Tuesday.

The episode, titled "Ang Plastic Mo! The Philippine Plastic Problem," looked at how the plastic pollution affects the marine environment, livelihoods of fishermen, food supply, and posed solutions. It fit perfectly this year's theme of Bantog Awards, which is Driving Developments through Science Communication.

The award was received by GMA Integrated News DigiDokyu reporter Lilian B. Tiburcio, who said, "as storytellers, we need to translate complex concepts into simple, layman's terms to ensure the public can easily understand them."

"Plastic has become an integral part of our daily lives, and through our documentary, we hope the public will gain a clearer understanding that the problem of plastic waste mismanagement in the Philippines is worsening," she added.

Along with Lilian, winners of the awards took home a trophy designed by Juan Said Imao, the son of National Artist Abdulmari Imao. The design represents the limitless possibilities in science and technology, and serves as tribute to the men and women of science.

The board of judges is comprised of Fernando Dela Cruz Paragas, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Mass Communication at the University of the Philippines Diliman; Dr. Ron F. Jabal, APR, Chairperson and CEO of the PAGEONE Group; Christine Ingrid M. Espinosa, Lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University; Teresa S. Congjuico, Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman; Jon Benedik A. Bunquin, Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman; and Garry Jay S. Montemayor, Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

"Ang Plastic Mo!" is part of GMA Integrated News' multimedia report on plastic, "Plastic is Everywhere. Now What?"
