Is this ice forming at the wall of a Legazpi home on cold days? Kuya Kim explains

A family in Legazpi, Albay was puzzled after they saw white, ice-like substance start forming on their wall on cold days.

In Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Thursday, Jome Añonuevo said that his children were the ones who first spotted this.

Malaki, makapal. Ngayon lang namin na-experience 'yan," he said.

"Nalulusaw naman siya sa kamay," Jome continued, adding that it melts up when the heat is strong, leaving only a small amount on their wall.

Jome sent the video to his brother, who uploaded the clip on social media.

The family suspects that it was caused by the cold weather because they don't have a freezer placed near the wall.

However, according to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio, it is not possible that it was ice that formed on the family's wall.

Malabong mabuo ang isang yelo doon sa pader," he said.

It was also not frost, which forms in cold places like Benguet.

"Nangyayari ang frost kapag ang isang surface ay aabot sa temperature na ideally 0°C o freezing temperature para maging yelo siya," he said.

According to chemist Janir Dakutan, it is possible that the white stuff was efflorescence, a deposit of salt formed on the surface of concrete.

"Makikita natin nagmo-moist 'yung semento, and then mag-e-evaporate 'yung water, so magda-dry. Naiiwan 'yung residue nung salt, 'yan 'yung puting substance na nakikita natin."
