This crab, if eaten, may kill a person within hours

Crabs may be one of the yummiest seafoods out there, but there is one kind that should be avoided.

According to Kuya Kim’s “24 Oras” report on Thursday, this is the devil crab, the most poisonous crab found in the Philippines. This kind of crab can be recognized though the red and brown spots on its shell.

Also known by its scientific name Zosimus aeneus, the devil crab has neurotoxins tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin, which are harmful to the human body.

“Even a small amount, especially ’pag mga bata or maliliit, [kahit] 0.2 milligram, pwede nang magkaro’n ng sintomas. It will take 10-45 minutes,” said Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region II regional director Dr. Angel Encarnacion.

In Cagayan last year, two kids died while their father was in critical condition after eating devil crabs, which are locally known as kuret. – Franchesca Viernes/RC, GMA News
