7 Ways to Remember Tia Pusit

Tia Pusit or ‘Tiya Meng’ to her close friends was one of the veteran comediennes in Philippine showbiz, making her mark in the entertainment scene with her fake Visayan accent, ear-tickling voice, and funny looks.  On October 2, she passed away at the age of 66 due to a hemorrhagic stroke.

In memory of Tia Pusit’s legacy in Philippine showbiz, “Tunay na Buhay” looks back at her colorful life through these trivia from her loved ones.

1. Tia Pusit was a radio broadcaster before she entered showbiz.
Tia Pusit started her showbiz career as a radio anchor with the help of her older sister Nova Villa.

“I was a broadcaster for Radio Veritas for 14 years. She became a P.A. [production assistant] ganiyan. She became [‘yung] naglalapat ng mga musika. Eh magaling, ayun naging broadcaster din,” Nova Villa said.

It is good to know that someone like Tia Pusit started out from being an assistant before she made it big in front of the camera.  Her perseverance is an example which everyone can follow.

2. Why was she called Tia Pusit?
How did Myrna VIllanueva became known as Tia Pusit? Her daughter Chanel Villanueva explains:

Instead of competing with her older sister Nova Villa, who was already an established actress at that time, Tia Pusit looked up to her and followed her footsteps.  Tia Pusit loved her sister so much that she was also Nova’s biggest fan.

3. Tia Pusit is her own stylist in “Bahay Mo Ba ‘To?”
In the GMA sitcom, “Bahay Mo Ba ‘To?” Tia Pusit played the role of Tiya Bella. Besides Tiya Bella’s funny gestures and undying love for Ronaldo Valdez’ character Nene, she was also a standout because of her different hairstyles and various headdresses which she herself created.

Tia Pusit’s disposition was never dull. She would always dress to express, not to impress.

4. Tia Pusit has expressive eyes.
During Tia Pusit’s last months in the hospital, her older sister Nova Villa took care of her.  As Nova was looking at Tia Pusit, she noticed that her sister had expressive and serious eyes.

Pero this time, I think parang sinasabi serious na ‘to usap na tayo. Ganun na medyo misty eyes,” Nova said.

5. Tia Pusit  and her red lips.
When asked what Tia Pusit’s favorite colors were, Chanel said there is no doubt it is blue and green. But when it came to her lips, Tia Pusit wanted it red. Whatever the situation, she will wear a red lipstick.

Tia Pusit loved being radiant, pretty, and young-at-heart.

6. Tia Pusit’s tattoo is Tweety Bird
Tia Pusit has a small tattoo on her right arm. From afar, you would think it is just a symbol or a lettering. But if you would look closely, it is actually a tattoo of Tweety Bird who reminded her of her character Tweety in GMA’s sitcom, “Beh Bote Nga.”

Even at her age, Tia Pusit was also playful and sentimental.

7. Tia Pusit --- the Explorer?
Despite her busy schedule, Tia Pusit always loved to travel with her family and sometimes, on her own.

Traveling does not always mean going to far-flung destinations. Tia Pusit likes to go around even while going on a simple shopping trip.

She would even ride a jeep or a bus during her travels. And when people would see her, she will talk and approach them like an ordinary passenger.  Tia Pusit remained humble until the end.
