“Rural Health Unit” ngayong Linggo sa ‘Stories of Hope’

Alas otso ng umaga — Isa-isang dumarating sa opisina ang mga miyembro Rural Health Unit Swab Team ng Aringay, La Union. Nagsisimula ang araw sa pag-aayos ng listahan ng mga taong kailangang i-swab, mga naging close contact ng mga taong nagpositibo sa COVID-19. Inihahanda na rin ng grupo ang mga swab kits. Pagkatapos ay magsusuot ng kanilang PPE o Personal Protective Equipment.

Bibisita ang RHU Swab team sa 12 barangay upang i-swab ang higit sa 100 katao. Ang ilan ay malapit lang sa bayan. Ang ilan naman ay nasa malalayong barangay. Minsan kailangang umakyat ng bundok o tumawid ng ilog sakay ng balsa upang maabot ang ilang residente. Dahil sa kakulangan ng kagamitan, hindi na magtatanggal ng PPE ang RHU Swab team. Tuloy-tuloy na nila itong suot sa loob ng 6-8 oras sa ilalim ng tirik na araw.

Ang ating mga healthcare workers ang simula’t dulo ng laban sa COVID 19 — mula sa mga swab teams na pilit pinipigil ang pagkalat ng sakit, at mga hospital staff na nag-aalaga sa mga tinamaan. Ang ilang miyembro ng RHU Swab Team, dating mga OFW na piniling umuwi at manatili na lamang sa Pilipinas kahit pa mas mataas ang sweldo sa ibang bansa. Hindi madali at sadyang delikado ang kanilang trabaho bilang frontliners sa panahon ng pandemya. ‘Para sa bayan’, ang sagot nila.

As early as 8 in the morning, the members of the Rural Health Unit Swab Team of Aringay, La Union arrive at the office. They start the day with organizing the list of people they need to visit and swab. After that, they arrange and label the swab kits. Before leaving, they put on their PPE or personal protective equipment.

The RHU Swab Team will visit 12 barangays today and try to swab over a hundred people. Some are very close, but some barangays are too far away and can only be reached by hiking up mountains or river-crossing. The team will do all this without changing their PPE, between 6-8 hours under the hot sun. The equipment is limited, so they try to save as much as they can.

The fight against COVID19 begins and ends with healthcare workers — from the swab teams like this one that work to prevent the spread of the virus, to the ones in the hospital that care for the sick people. Some of the healthcare workers of the RHU Swab Team used to work abroad as OFWs, where the pay was much higher, but have decided to come home for different reasons. ‘We do this for the nation’, they say, with the hope that they can be protected and cared for as well.
