Simple but effective acne solutions for teens

Prom season is just around the corner! Worried about an acne breakout ruining your most awaited day? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

According to ‘Pinoy MD’ resident dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez, acne or pimples are common among teenagers because of the hormonal changes happening in their bodies.

During teenage years, there is an increase in the production of a hormone called androgen which triggers the body’s sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum, or oil.

Sebum keeps the skin moist and soft, but too much of it may cause blemishes or skin irritation.

“Kapag ang oil nag-clog yan sa pores, nagkakaroon ng pagputok ng oil glands doon sa ilalim ng balat at nagkakaroon ng inflammation or ‘yung pamumula,” Dr. Marquez said.

Aside from hormones, other factors like the use of cosmetics and heredity may also contribute to acne development.

While this can be a common problem for teenagers, there are simple but effective ways to prevent zits from spreading.

Here are some tips from Dr. Marquez:

Tip 1:

Wash acne-prone areas twice a day. Washing removes excess oil and dead skin cells. Use a gentle cleanser and use oil-free, water-based skin care products. Also, remove makeup before going to bed.

Tip 2:

Don't pick or squeeze pimples and blemishes. Picking or squeezing can cause infection or scarring.

Tip 3:

Use an over-the-counter acne cream or gel to help dry excess oil. Look for products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as the active ingredient.

Tip 4:

Shower after exercising or doing strenuous work. Oil and sweat on your skin can trap dirt and bacteria.

Tip 5:

Watch what touches your face. Keep your hair clean and off your face. Also avoid resting your hands or objects, such as telephone receivers, on your face. Sweat, dirt and oils can contribute to acne. —Rica Fernandez/PF, GMA News
