ENGLISH
In recent years, insurgency has persisted in the northern part of Myanmar, the Buddhists Burmese and the Rohingya Muslims. The Myanmar government denied the citizenship of the Rohingya and their movement within the country is restricted by local authorities. The internal conflict eventually prompted thousands of Rohingya to flee to neighboring Bangladesh.

The United Nations has called the decades-long oppression and the atrocities by the military in Myanmar as a form of “ethnic cleansing”. Myanmar officials are firm in their stance that the Rohingya are not citizens of their nation while neighboring Bangladesh considers them as immigrants who could be deported anytime soon. Today, the Rohingya is the largest stateless community in the world, the denial of citizenship increases their vulnerability to any form of abuse since they are not entitled to legal protection from any government.

Documentarist and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees advocate Atom Araullo travelled to the capital of Bangladesh in Dhaka where he met Filipinos preparing relief goods to be distributed for the Rohingya in the largest refugee camp in the southernmost part of the country. They travelled more than eighteen hours to reach the camp but along the way, they experienced a treacherous and unforgettable journey.

In Atom Araullo’s first documentary for I-Witness, join him as he learns about the story of the Rohingya people referred to by the United Nations as the ‘most persecuted minority’ in the world.
