'Walang Maiiwan,' dokumentaryo ni Kara David ngayong Sabado sa I-Witness

“WALANG MAIIWAN”
Dokumentaryo ni Kara David
November 5, 2016

Through rivers and endless tracks of muddy earth, on top of a hill, stands Burgos East Elementary School. This school at the edge of San Guillermo, Isabela teaches children from the remote communities of Dimalama, Dilukot, and Dicamay.  To say that the school is in the middle of nowhere is an understatement.  The everyday reality here is that children trek, ride their family’s carabao, cross hanging bridges and rivers just to attend class.

The Burgos East teachers are not spared from this difficult terrain. Much of their time depends on risks posed by rivers and landslides. But their greater foe is more powerful than the forces of nature- and much harder to fight. They have to battle school absenteeism.

“Walang Maiiwan” is a story about a school caught in the middle of hardships. In a place where learning the ABCs is enough education, head teacher Jun Marquez strives to keep their students motivated.

This Saturday on I-Witness, Kara David meets teachers and students faced with the bitter truth that earning a living is a priority over the need for learning. What will teachers do to make sure that no one is left behind?

Filipino version:

Tubig at putik.
