Guardians of the bird nests

Episode airs on May 28, 2007 Monday late night after Saksi Breathtaking El Nido, part of the island-province of Palawan, is one of the country's popular tourist destinations but I-Witness’ Howie Severino and his documentary team went there to experience what must be one of the world's loneliest jobs. Scattered throughout dozens of unpopulated islands are solitary sentries in tiny huts perched high on rock faces. They guard the resources of industry perhaps even more precious to El Nido than tourism resorts – the nests of the balinsasayaw bird, which are highly prized as Chinese medicine and soup. Howie bonds for days with one of these sentries, including young Ruel, who can scale craggy limestone walls like spiderman and find birds’ nests in the dark. Howie is no spiderman, so he and his team devise ways to keep up with the nimble Ruel. Together, they explore watery caves, sleep on a rat-infested beach, and watch the sun rise from an elevated hut overlooking the sea. But it's also a dangerous living, as Ruel must chase away armed nest robbers who know these islands as well as he, risking slipping on the rocks and falling to his death. Howie Severino documents the tough lives of these guardians and their uncanny ability to adapt to nature on I-Witness on May 28, Monday late night after Saksi, over GMA-7.

Pugad Dinarayo ng mga turista ang mala-paraisong tanawin ng El Nido, Palawan. Pero iba ang pakay ni Howie Severino doon – nais niyang maranasan ang isa na siguro sa pinakamalungkot na trabaho sa mundo. Nagkalat sa mga isla ng El Nido ang mga bantay na mag-isang naninirahan sa mga malilit na kubo sa matataas na batuhan. Binabantayan nila ang industriyang maaaring mas mahalaga pa sa mga world-class na resort dito – ang mga pugad ng ibong balinsasayaw, na binibili ng mga Tsino mula sa iba’t ibang parte ng mundo, para sa sabaw at gamot. Sasamahan ni Howie ang isa sa mga bantay, ang binatang si Ruel. Kayang-kaya akyatin ni Ruel ang mga matatalas na batong pader na animo’y si Spiderman. Nahahanap niya ang mga pugad sa kweba kahit sa kadiliman. Magkasama nilang susuungin ang mga kwebang may tubig at matutulog sa isang aplayang teritoryo ng mga daga. Mula sa pugad ni Ruel, masasaksihan din nila ang pagsikat ng araw sa ibabaw ng karagatan. Ngunit mapanganib rin ang buhay bantay. Kasama sa trabaho ni Ruel ang paghahabol sa mga magnanakaw ng pugad na kabisado rin ang mga pasikot-sikot ng bawat isla. Nariyan rin ang peligrong kinakaharap sa pag-akyat sa mga bato.
