What happens when you lose your best friend who is also your closest professional collaborator? You honor his memory by working with the same gung-ho spirit that marked the partnership.

That’s what a crest-fallen Howie Severino has tried to do after his cameraman, Egay Navarro, died last year.

As part of the 15th anniversary series of I-Witness, Howie reflects on his two decades of producing documentaries with Navarro, and the qualities that made him one of the greatest cameramen of his time.

Howie dissects some of Egay’s best work and its impact on Philippine television. He and his team gather and reunite some of the most memorable characters from their documentaries.

Howie traces his partnership with Egay to an encounter with animated Aytas in 1991, just after Mt. Pinatubo devastated their community and landscape. It was there that Howie first saw the cameraman who could move like a cat, then drop his camera to dance with the Aytas.

Together with Egay’s widow Rica, Howie and his team return to Pinatubo, 23 years later and search for the same group of Aytas.

Howie Severino’s I-Witness documentary,“Cameraman” airs on GMA 7 this Saturday, after Celebrity Bluff.
