Behind-the-scenes: Kara David’s heart-stopping skydive for ‘I-Witness’
By Donna Allanigue
I-Witness airs every Saturday night, after Celebrity Bluff, on GMA-7. Follow their official Facebook and Twitter accounts for more updates about their episodes.
During World War II, paratroopers played a huge part in the victory of Americans and Filipinos against Japanese forces. These soldiers performed airborne attacks which eventually led to recapturing Corregidor and preventing the massacre of prisoners of war in Los Baños, Laguna.
But what does it take to be a paratrooper – someone brave enough to jump out of a plane and into battle?
For GMA-7’s “I-Witness,” TV host and documentarist Kara David recently shot the documentary “Airborne” about paratroopers’ courage and dedication. To get a first-hand taste of what paratroopers experience in the line of duty, Kara herself tried skydiving from a plane 4,000 feet above the ground!
Check out some behind-the-scenes photos of Kara’s ground training and actual jump from Multimedia Producer Donna Allanigue:
Kara joins first-time sky jumpers in an intense ground training session conducted by the club Skydive Zambales. The training was held before Kara’s actual jump at Iba Airport field in Iba, Zambales.
Kara gets an “OK” sign from the jumpmaster as she performs really well in the ground training. Jumpmasters are expert paratroopers who train newbies.
Before the actual jump, the trainees have to master attaining and maintaining the proper body position while exiting the plane. The most sacred rule before taking off? Never, ever look down. Focus your attention on the jumpmaster!
Sky jumping isn’t for the weak of heart– that’s why it’s essential to check a skydiver’s blood pressure before they jump. Kara’s was 110/80! She’s good to go!
Even with intense training, skydiving can be very risky. Before the jump, the group gathers to pray for everyone’s safety.
Guess who we met in the field? It’s Kapuso actor Raymart Santiago, a skydiving enthusiast! Here he helps Kara get ready for her jump. He tells her, “Kaya mo ‘yan!”
Raymond offers to join Kara on her jump, with him going first.
Later, Kara posted this photo of herself in mid-air on Twitter (@karadavid) “Selfie at 4,000 feet!” she tweeted. “‘Nung pababa na, parang lumalapit sa ‘yo ‘yung lupa. Sobrang kinabahan ako!” Kara told the I-Witness team after her jump.
Who’s that with the pink parachute? It’s Kara from 4,000 feet above the ground!
And that’s it! Good job, Kara!
Kara looked really happy after her jump! Afterwards, she said with a laugh, “Ang palpak ko,” because instead of landing with both feet on the ground, she landed on her side.
Do you know the first person Kara called after the jump? Her mom! “‘Ma, buhay pa ‘ko! Makakauwi pa ‘ko! Makakapag-dinner pa tayo!” said Kara.
Kara poses with some members of Skydive Zambales after her jump. The club awarded Kara a special certificate for completing the training and actual skydiving.
Watch “Airborne” at 10:45 PM June 7 on “I-Witness” after Celebrity Bluff. —PF, GMA News
