"Black Manila": An 'I-Witness' documentary by Howie Severino

From high above the earth, an intriguing black smoky square marks the otherwise varied satellite image of Manila.
Howie Severino and his documentary team search for this spot on the ground and find a grimy, toxic place where children work and many babies die soon after birth.
It's a vast charcoal-making complex inside Tondo where the perpetual burning of chemically coated wood inside earthen ovens fills the air with a pungent, suffocating smoke.
Howie and his team meet the people here eking out survival and preparing for the government's demolition of their homes and livelihoods. Their proximity to Smokey Mountain and the horrific quality of the air have led many to call this place Smokey 2.
But the thick fumes are even worse than the gases that escape from the original mountain.
It's a nightmarish world. But for reasons this documentary will reveal, residents prefer living here over their next best options.

Kung titingnan ang satellite image ng Maynila, hindi lang mga bahay, kalsada, at gusali ang makikita rito. May isang bahagi ng syudad na tila kinulayan na ng itim, isang bahagi ng Maynila na mistulang nasunog na. Ito ang Sitio Damayan, sa Tondo.
Dito matutuklasan ni Howie Severino ang mausok at maruming mundo sa loob ng ulingan. Dito niya makikilala ang siyam na taong gulang na si Mayang.
Kabilang siya sa mahigit apat na raang pamilyang nakatira sa ulingan at naghahanapbuhay rito.
Dahil malapit sa Smokey Mountain, at dahil na rin sa kasulasulasok na amoy mula sa basura at mga lutuan ng uling, marami ang nagbansag dito bilang Smokey 2.
Kikilalanin ni Howie Severino ang mga residente rito at aalamin kung bakit nais nilang manatili rito bagamat may pangamba ng demolisyon.
