'I-Witness' 14th Anniversary Series: Howie Severino meets heroes of Bohol quake

As the earth continued to shake, two fathers raced against time to save their young children from the rubble.

Digging desperately in the debris of a collapsed computer shop, they heard cries for help. They rescued one child, who escaped miraculously with just shallow wounds. But his best friend was lifeless when she was pulled out.

Stories of relief and sorrow abounded in Bohol in the hours and days after the powerful earthquake of October 15. But also constant throughout the disaster zone were heroic deeds by people who set aside concerns for their own safety to attempt to save lives, often of strangers. 

 

Howie Severino and his documentary team travel through ravaged Bohol to search for uplifting stories of heroism in the face of danger. They learn that fear and paralysis too were a common reaction of many; but for a mysteriously select few, bravery and action seemed to be an instinct. 

 

You may never know how you will react in the face of such an emergency until it happens. Near the epicenter of the quake in northern Bohol, Howie and his team meet one hero, who saved disabled children from a river minutes after the cataclysm. He also leads the team to a new and strange natural formation that solved one of the biggest mysteries of the Bohol earthquake.

Habang yumayanig ang lupa, dalawang ama ang sabay na nagbungkal sa isang gumuhong computer shop para masalba ang natabunan nilang mga anak.

 

Narinig pa nila ang kanilang mga sigaw para sa tulong. Ngunit isang bata lang sa limang natabunan, ang nailigtas. Isa lang ito sa mga kuwento ng peligro na nagkalat sa Bohol matapos ang 7.2 magnitude earthquake na tumama rito noong October 15. Pero bukod sa mga kuwento ng kasawian, lumitaw rin ang mga kuwento ng kabayanihan. Sa gitna ng delubyong iniwan ng lindol, may mga taong nagbuwis ng kanilang buhay para makasagip ng iba.

 

Susuyurin ni Howie Severino ang ilang bahagi ng Bohol para makilala sila, ang mga simpleng bayaning naglakas loob tumulong sa kapuwa sa kabila ng banta sa sarili nilang kaligtasan.

Sa bingit ng buhay at kamatayan, tila mahirap malaman kung ano nga ba ang gagawin, kung uunahing isalba ang iba kesa sa sarili.

 

Sa Inabanga, malapit sa epicenter ng lindol, makikilala ni Howie Severino si Kapitan Felix. Sinagip niya ang ilang mga batang naliligo sa sapa sa gitna ng lindol. Sa kanilang barangay madidiskubre ang biyak sa lupa na halos sampung talampakan ang taas. Ito ang itinuturong sanhi ng pagyanig ng lupa sa isa sa pinakamalakas na lindol na tumama sa bansa.

 

Ngayong Lunes, Novermber 4, samahan si Howie Severino kilalanin ang ilang natatanging bayani sa “Buwis Buhay, Sagip Buhay”, sa ika-14 na anibersaryo ng I-Witness.
