Fledgling of a juvenile Philippine eagle on ‘Born to be Wild’
BORN TO BE WILD
September 29, 2019
It is a rare privilege to see a Philippine eagle in the wild and an even rarer occurrence to witness a juvenile fledgling—or preparing for its first flight—in its nest. In the forests of Mindanao, Doc Nielsen is lucky enough to see both. Joining eagle conservationists and forest rangers, Doc Nielsen and the team document a five-month old Philippine eagle stretching its wings and practicing how to fly. A powerful bird with razor-sharp eyes and a haunting call, the Philippine eagle is the king of our forests. The king is critically endangered, but concerned organizations like the Philippine Eagle Foundation are bent on saving this national treasure.
Doc Ferds is in Misamis Oriental to document another iconic Philippine species. In a rare wildlife moment, a mother and child Philippine tarsier are seen in their natural habitat. In this detailed footage, the mother is discovered to be hiding her young in an embrace. The team’s lenses zoom in to see the young tarsier emerge from the arms of its mother and interact with her in a tender moment. Doc Ferds and his team join a quarterly population assessment of this rare primate.
This Sunday, Born to be Wild brings us these Philippine icons in sharp 4K detail. Don’t miss the episode airing Sunday, after AHA!
