Revisiting the 20-year-old Philippine tamaraw on 'Born to be Wild'

BORN TO BE WILD
August 4, 2019

Doc Ferds visits the 20-year-old Kalibasib, a Philippine tamaraw being cared for inside the gene pool and conservation center in Mindoro. The tamaraw’s once dwindling numbers led to the creation of the gene pool, where experts hope to breed Kalibasib’s kind. Doc Ferds first met “Kali” in 2008 when he assisted in the check-up of Kali and his mother. Kali’s mother has already passed away, leaving him behind. The tamaraw’s life span is recorded to be anywhere between 20-25 years. Now that Kali has reached his twenties, he remains a symbol of hope to restore the tamaraw to healthy populations. Join Doc Ferds as he catches up with an old friend.

In Sorsogon, Doc Nielsen is surprised by the vast number of sardines or “lawlaw” in the area. Fishermen admit that they have to throw away some of their catch when their boats become too full. And some sardines that are “rejected” or not of good market quality are left on the shore. Doc Nielsen joins a group of sardine fishers to know more.
