Discover the threats to big fish on 'Born to be Wild'

BORN TO BE WILD

“BIG FISH” Part III

Wednesday, June 12

The Big Fish Series gets even more exciting this week!

Doc Ferds is still looking for the biggest Mameng in Palau.  Last week, he was surprised to meet a Mameng four feet in length! It approached the divers and stayed for about thirty minutes.  The Mameng is a critically endangered fish. But in Palau, they are protected under the law; fishermen are not allowed catch the Mameng.  Resident divers in Palau confirm that there is a bigger Mameng than the one he and the team already documented.  Doc Ferds again hits the water to prove this.

In Cagayan, Doc Nielsen sees a ten-kilo tanigue caught by fishermen. He decides to open and dissect the fish to see what it eats.  But to his surprise, Doc Nielsen finds an alien-looking parasite inside the fish’s stomach.  According to Dr. Mudjikeewis Santos of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, parasites are not the only threat to the big fish of the sea.  Overfishing is a problem being felt worldwide.  Dr. Santos joins the team to study the fishing industry in Cagayan and gives his insights on how the big fish can be saved.

Don’t miss this week’s episode of Born to be Wild after Saksi.
