Washington State lawmakers pass resolution recognizing Fil-Am educators

LOS ANGELES, California – The Washington State House of Representatives has recognized the contributions of Filipino and Filipino-American educators in student learning and promoting cultural understanding.

According to House Resolution 4644, “Filipino Americans make substantial and valuable contributions to the heritage, diversity, education, culture, traditions, and economic prosperity of Washington State.”

The resolution, spearheaded by Washington State Representative Deb Manjarrez of Wapato, was supported by other legislators.

In a press statement, Representative Manjarrez emphasized the vital role of Filipino and Filipino American educators.

“We are blessed and honored to have Filipino American educators working in our schools, living in our neighborhoods, and sharing their rich culture, history, and heritage throughout our state,” said Manjarrez.

“Washington is home to cities and towns rich in Filipino American history, including my hometown of Wapato. Filipino American educators have made lasting contributions to our schools, particularly in the arts, literature, and business. They are truly deserving of this resolution.”

Washington State ranks fifth in the United States for having the largest Filipino community, with a population of approximately 185,000.

Many Filipino American educators have played a vital role in the state’s academic institutions, enriching student learning and promoting cultural understanding.

To mark the occasion, a delegation of Filipino American educators visited the State Capitol on Wednesday, March 26, and were presented with official copies of the resolution.

The event served as a moment of pride for the Filipino American community, recognizing their dedication and contributions to education in Washington State.
