California attorney-general reminds immigrants of rights ahead of Trump inauguration

The Office of the Attorney General of California headed by Filipino-American Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a consumer alert to inform California immigrants about their rights and protections under the law.

This came following US President-elect Donald Trump’s recent remarks about the arrest, detention, and deportation of illegal immigrants.

“State and local law enforcement cannot ask for your immigration status for immigration enforcement purposes,” the alert read.

“California law expressly prohibits law enforcement from inquiring about a person’s immigration status for immigration enforcement purposes,” it added.

The alert said that state and local enforcement cannot assist the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with immigration enforcement, with limited exceptions.

“This means state and local law enforcement cannot investigate, cannot interrogate, cannot arrest, and cannot detain you unless they are part of a joint federal task force where the primary purpose of the task force is not immigration enforcement,” it said.

State and local law enforcement also cannot share your personal information with immigration enforcement. —NB, GMA Integrated News
