Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said Wednesday that the DOLE would help Filipinos in the United States facing deportation amid the Trump administration's sweeping immigration crackdown.
''Ang Department of Labor and Employment ay patuloy na tutulong din sa DMW (Department of Migrant Workers) dahil 'yan naman ang laging tagubilin ng ating Pangulo Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.: convergence ng mga ginagawa ng iba't-ibang departamento,'' Laguesma told reporters.
(The DOLE will help the DMW because that's the guidance of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.: the convergence of the duties of various departments.)
In November last year, the DMW said it would assist over 300,000 undocumented Filipinos in the US who could possibly be deported.
Affected Filipinos were promised assistance in job retooling, reskilling, and employment facilitation.
Following his return to the White House last week, US President Donald Trump began to carry out his campaign pledge to deport a substantial number of illegal immigrants, particularly those with criminal records.
On Sunday, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel "Babe" Romualdez said at least 24 Filipinos were flown out of the country due to their involvement in criminal activities.
Romualdez had also advised Filipinos without "any kind of status" to voluntarily return to the Philippines or start working on their documents and no longer wait to be deported. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
