PH consulate warns of dry, windy conditions in parts of California amid wildfires
The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles has informed Filipinos about red flag warnings issued in parts of California amid the ongoing massive wildfires.
Red flag warnings indicate dry and windy conditions that could lead to the rapid spread of a wildfire, while a particularly dangerous situation (PDS) red flag warning signifies elevated fire weather conditions, the consulate said.
Red flag warnings are in effect in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties until Wednesday, January 15.
Meanwhile, PDS red flag warnings will take effect from 4 a.m. of Tuesday, January 14, to 12 p.m. of Wednesday, January 15 in the following areas:
Western San Gabriel Mountains
I5 Corridor
Southern Ventura Mountains
Santa Susana Mountains
Ventura Valleys
Western Santa Monicas
Northern San Fernando Valley
Ventura County Coastal Plain
With the very low humidity and stronger winds, the National Weather Service (NWS) in the US said such conditions could increase the risk of fire danger.
The NWS advises everyone that throwing away cigarettes or matches out of moving vehicles is not allowed when red flag warnings are hoisted, as it may ignite dry grass and may cause wildfires.
Authorities also warned the public not to leave a fire unattended, as sparks and embers can blow into leaves or grass, which could ignite a fire.
Further, the consulate told Filipinos in affected areas to monitor developments from the NWS and the California Fire Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and heed warnings from local authorities.
For Filipinos who may require assistance, they may reach out to the consulate through (323) 528-1528.
Over 150 Filipinos have lost their homes to the fire, while more than 20 individuals have died because of the disaster. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
