DFA: Husband of Filipina killed in Slovenia is prime suspect

The husband of the Filipina migrant who was killed in Slovenia is now the prime suspect in the case and is now detained by authorities, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

“It is the husband who was the prime suspect, after they had a fight. Now he is under custody,” said DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega in a message to GMA News Online.

Marvil Facturan was allegedly killed by her spouse, Mitja Kocjancic, while the newlywed couple was on vacation in Bled, Slovenia on December 29, according to a statement from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO).

The CFO said the victim departed the Philippines using a tourist visa which means Facturan did not undergo the agency’s training.

“We conduct counselling for the spouses of foreign nationals kung saan tinitingnan namin ‘yung background nung foreign spouse at nagbibigay kami ng certificate para makaalis sila rito,” said CFO chairperson Dante Ang II in Mariz Umali’s report in 24 Oras.

(We conduct counseling for the spouses of foreign nationals wherein we check the background of the foreign spouse and we issue a certificate.)

“Tinitingnan namin kung may criminal record ba ‘yung foreign national or kung may iba pang concern that may require additional counseling ng Filipina. Unfortunately, hindi siya pumasok sa ruta na ‘yun,” he added.

(We check if the foreign national has a criminal record or if there are other concerns that may require additional counseling of the Filipina. Unfortunately, she did not follow the proper process.)

The Philippine Embassy in Vienna is also now in communication with the victim's mother, the DFA said.

"The Philippine Government condemns this tragic incident and expresses its heartfelt condolences to the victim’s bereaved family in the Philippines," the DFA said.

"The Philippine Embassy in Vienna is working with Slovenian authorities not only for the repatriation of remains, but towards the attainment of justice for our kababayan," the DFA added.

The DFA said on Sunday that the Philippine Embassy in Vienna is already working with Slovenian authorities regarding the repatriation of Facturan's remains and the attainment of justice for the victim.
