PH consulates checking if any Filipinos affected in New Orleans, Las Vegas incidents
NEW YORK - The Philippine Consulates in Houston and Los Angeles are investigating whether any Filipinos were affected by two acts of terrorism in New Orleans and Las Vegas.
The Philippine Consulate in Texas, which has jurisdiction over New Orleans, Louisiana, stated that they have not yet received any reports of Filipinos or Filipino Americans being affected by the attack.
The incident claimed the lives of 15 people, including the 42-year-old suspect identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a former member of the U.S. Army.
“We are in close coordination with our Honorary Consul and local authorities in Louisiana to determine if any Filipino nationals have been affected by the attack. Fortunately, to date, there have been no reports of Filipinos injured as a result of this incident. The Consulate has also not yet received any requests for assistance from members of the Filipino community regarding this incident," said the Houston Philippine Consulate General’s Assistance to Nationals Section in an email to GMA Integrated News.
"We are continuously monitoring the situation for any updates and stand ready to assist Filipino nationals who may have been affected by the attack,” it added.
More than 30 people were injured, some of whom are in critical condition at the hospital, after the suspect ran them over on a busy street in Bourbon Street early on New Year's Day.
The suspect was killed by police after engaging them in a gunfight.
Las Vegas
Meanwhile, the Philippine Consulate General’s office in Los Angeles is also checking if any Filipino or Filipino American individuals were affected by the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck in front of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, hours after the attack in New Orleans.
“The Consulate General has not received information that any Filipino was involved in the incident. The Consulate is coordinating closely with the Office of the Philippine Honorary Consul in Las Vegas in monitoring further developments regarding the incident. “
Seven people were injured, and the driver of the vehicle, an active U.S. Army Special Forces member and Green Beret, also died. Authorities are now investigating the connection between the two attacks.
