OFW involved in death of Kuwaiti child - embassy

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was involved in the death of a child in her employer’s household in Kuwait, the Philippine Embassy said on Friday.

In a statement, the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait said they were ''shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic incident.''

They also extended their condolences to the grieving family and said that they were cooperating with the investigation by local authorities.

“The Embassy is cooperating with Kuwaiti authorities investigating the incident and is also providing assistance to the detained Filipino domestic worker, within the framework of Kuwaiti law and in keeping with the Embassy’s mandate,” the statement said.

The embassy added that the incident does not speak of the overall character of Filipinos in Kuwait.

“This isolated incident does not reflect the character of Filipinos and the Filipino community in Kuwait, who are recognized for their hard work, reliability, and positive contribution to society,” it said.

A visa ban on Filipino nationals was imposed by Kuwait in May 2023 after the murder of Jullebee Ranara sparked a series of spats between the Philippines and Kuwait.

It was lifted more than a year later, in June 2024, after the two countries reached an "agreement to resume the recruitment of domestic workers" after a "breakthrough" in talks. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
