Overseas Filipinos commission, FEU sign deal for exchange visitor program

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) on Monday signed a memorandum of agreement with the Far Eastern University (FEU) to formalize a partnership between the two agencies for the Exchange Visitor Program (EVP).

The EVP is an international exchange program of the US government which aims to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the US and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges." In the Philippines, the EVP Committee, chaired by the Department of Foreign Affairs, evaluates and processes applications to the program and helps successful applicants through the process including their re-entry to the Philippines.

In a speech during the event, CFO Secretary Romeo Arugay said that the EVP will aid in integrating Filipino students and teachers into American culture and industries.

The agreement between FEU and the CFO intends to immerse students in the environment of the CFO and improve global competence through cooperation between government bodies, academic institutions, and industry leaders.

“For Filipinos, participation in the EVP provides opportunities for exposure to the American way of life, advanced resources in education, technology, and culture, and the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and expertise essential for the growth of the Philippines," said CFO Secretary Romeo Arugay.

“By synchronizing the objectives and practices of these three sectors, we’re pushing for a more cohesive and supportive environment for students seeking opportunities abroad,” he added.

With the theme "Bridging Boundaries: Strengthening Student Global Industry Experience through Government, Academe, and Industry Collaboration,” the globalization conference included discussions on international work experiences and opportunities worldwide.

The CFO has registered 1,531 EVP participants within the first quarter of 2024.

“The Commission on Filipinos Overseas remains steadfast in its mandate, strongly emphasizing assisting young Filipinos who wish to join the EVP. Instead of you coming to us, we in the government will reach out to you,” Arugay said. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
