LTO launches digital driver’s license renewal for OFWs in Taiwan

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan will soon be able to renew their driver’s licenses online, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced.

According to a statement on Thursday, the LTO and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will be launching a pilot implementation of a digital transaction for the renewal of driver’s licenses in Taiwan, involving around 400 OFWs in Taichung and Kaohsiung, on September 21 and 22.

“Hindi na kailangang maghintay pa ng pag-uwi sa Pilipinas ang ating mga kababayang OFWs para mai-renew ang kanilang mga lisensya dahil pwede na nila itong gawin malapit sa kanilang mga pinagta-trabahuhan at tinutuluyan sa Taiwan,” said LTO Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II.

(Our OFWs no longer need to wait until they get back to the Philippines to renew their licenses because they can now accomplish it near where they are working and staying at in Taiwan)

The pilot program of the online renewal process will test the system, and will be used to identify glitches through feedback from OFW users.

The LTO aims to expand this service to OFWs in the Middle East, the United States, and Europe.

Interested OFWs would be tasked to provide the following:

  • Driver’s license expiring within 60 days or within 2 years, with no revisions to be made prior to renewal
  • Active LTMS portal with OFW’s biometric profile
  • Online Comprehensive Driver’s Education certification from the LTO portal
  • Medical certificate from an LTO-accredited facility

The license card will be printed and shipped through a preferred courier to the OFW once it has been paid.

LTO also said that they aim to expand said services to the Middle East, United States and Europe.

“The transaction time to complete the renewal process can be completed in as fast as one (1) hour provided that the OFW has applied coinciding the office hours of LTO, comparable to the total processing time of a walk-in applicant as cited in the Citizen’s Charter,” said Mendoza.

“From the initial application of the OFW until the delivery of his license card to his appointed foreign address in Taiwan for this launch, the total process can take anywhere from 3-5 days,” he added. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
