Missing Fil-Am nurse found dead; neighbor arrested for murder
NEW YORK — The Beaverton Police Department in Oregon has confirmed the murder of a Filipino-American nurse who was reported missing on September 4.
Authorities have yet to provide details on how and where the body of 32-year-old Melissa Jubane, a cardiac nurse at St. Vincent Medical Center, was found.
The police arrested Jubane's neighbor, 27-year-old Bryce Jonathan Schubert, who is now facing murder charges.
Last week, the victim married her fiancé, Bryan, in Hawaii and had just returned to her apartment when she was reported missing. She reportedly went to work on September 3 but did not report for her morning shift the next day.
On September 4, the Beaverton Police conducted a welfare check at the victim’s apartment where they found her car but not her bag, wallet, and keys.
According to Jubane's family, they tried calling her phone several times but it was already turned off, which worried them. As a result, her name was entered into the National Law Enforcement Database as a missing person.
Authorities, meanwhile, obtained a lead connecting the suspect to the victim's disappearance.
Investigators have not yet provided details on how the suspect killed the victim, as the case remains under active investigation.
"As a result of an extensive investigation, it was determined that one of Melissa’s neighbors, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert of Beaverton, was involved in her disappearance," Beaverton Police Department said in a statement
"Subsequently, Schubert was arrested this evening and charged with Melissa’s murder. Melissa Jubane’s remains have been recovered. This is an active investigation," it added.
"While we acknowledge the significant community interest and concern, we must withhold further details to preserve the integrity of the investigation."
The suspect is currently detained in Washington County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
The Beaverton Police Department extended its condolences to the family and colleagues of the victim.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the community members who have assisted with the search for Melissa. Our deepest condolences go out to Melissa’s family, friends, and coworkers," it said. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
