NEW YORK CITY - As part of the celebration of National Heroes Day and History Month, free screenings will be held in New York City featuring the restored and remastered film José Rizal and three documentaries from GMA Network’s i-Witness that delve into the culture and history of the Philippines.

The free screening is part of the annual "Sinehan sa Konsulado," organized by Sentro Rizal and the Philippine Consulate General of New York.

The screening will be headlined by José Rizal: The Movie, directed by the late National Artist Marilou Diaz-Abaya. It will be shown from August 27 to 29 at New York University’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center.

José Rizal: The Movie, produced by GMA Films and starring Cesar Montano, was first released in 1998.

New York Consul General Senen Mangalile emphasized the importance of showcasing Rizal’s life story to Filipino-American youth, as it played a crucial role in shaping Philippine history.

"This year's Sinehan sa Konsulado is a meaningful commemoration as we honor both National Heroes Day and History Month. Our selection of the digitally restored and remastered film José Rizal pays tribute to our national hero, reflecting on his profound legacy and the pivotal role he played in shaping our nation's history."

The screening will also feature three notable documentaries from GMA Public Affairs' multi-awarded program I-Witness that explore the rich culture and history of the Philippines.

These include "Huling Katipunero" by Howie Severino, which delves into the life of Macario Sakay, one of the greatest Filipino warriors; and "Hinabing Pag-asa" by Kara David, which explores the traditional clothing of the Maranao people. Weaving is an integral part of Maranao culture. During the Marawi Siege, it also served as a way for them to cope with and forget the bombings and gunfire.

Another documentary, "Pag-asa" by Atom Araullo, discusses the history of the islands owned by the Philippines that are being claimed by China.

The Philippines is not only rich in culture but also in islands and marine resources. This is why various countries are closely watching and eyeing our waters — the West Philippine Sea.

According to Mangalile, these three documentaries vividly depict narratives of some of the country’s significant historical events.

"These documentaries delve into important cultural and historical themes, offering valuable insights into our past and the ongoing narratives that define us as Filipinos. The Philippine Consulate General in New York is pleased to partner with GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV, GMA News TV, and Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative of New York University to bring these important films to our community here in the New York tri-state area," Mangalile said.

"We also deeply value our collaboration with the different chapters of the Knights of Rizal in New York on the screening of José Rizal, which allows us to further honor the legacy of our national hero. Through these films, we hope to inspire the Filipino community in our jurisdiction to connect more deeply with our shared heritage, honor the sacrifices of our heroes, and foster a sense of pride in our cultural identity," he added. —KG, GMA Integrated News
