Fil-Am leaders thank Biden for helping Filipino community

NEW YORK — Filipino-American supporters of US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed gratitude for the substantial assistance provided by the administration to the Filipino community.

In a statement sent to GMA Integrated News, from Filipino Americans for Biden Harris said the Filipino community has "greatly benefited" from the Biden administration.

"His administration has recognized and celebrated our contributions, ensuring our voices are heard and our community is represented," the group said.

"Filipino Americans have greatly benefited from his policies, which have protected healthcare for those with pre-existing conditions, lowered costs for millions of patients, and resulted in greater gains in health insurance coverage for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities than any other racial or ethnic group."

Following Biden's announcement that he will no longer seek reelection in November, the group said the Fil-Am community "stands ready to support President Biden in any way possible."

Former Mayor and Councilmember Melissa Ramoso of Artesia, California  praised Biden for "his courage to lead and serve as our President," adding it "should always be met with respect and honor."

Mark Polido, a former mayor of Cerritos, California, lauded Biden for "his commitment to restoring decorum, unity, and respect was a breath of fresh air for America and Filipino Americans across the country."

Although saddened, Bergenfield, New Jersey Mayor Arvin Amatorio also thanked Biden and supported his endorsement of Harris as his successor.

"His decision to endorse Vice President Harris showcases his commitment to the nation above all else," he said.

US President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign on Sunday after fellow Democrats lost faith in his mental acuity and ability to beat Donald Trump while endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the party's candidate.

Biden, 81, in a post on X, said he will remain in his role as president and commander-in-chief until his term ends in January 2025 and will address the nation this week.

Biden's announcement follows a wave of public and private pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party officials to quit the race after his shockingly poor performance in a June 27 televised debate last month against Republican rival Trump, 78. —with Reuters/KBK, GMA Integrated News
