Filipinos in Taiwan celebrate Father’s Day, PH Independence Day with lively party
TAIPEI — The Father's Day celebration of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan's capital transformed into a vibrant street party, aligning with the 126th Joint Philippine Independence Day and Migrant Workers Day celebration organized by the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO).
In a gesture to uplift the spirits of OFW fathers in Taiwan, diverse groups of OFWs from across the country showcased their talents in a lively dance competition. Present at the historic event were officials and board members from various MECO offices, including New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-Ih, who was there to not only honor migrant workers but also recognize the accomplishments of MECO and Taiwan.
A standout performance came from a group of Filipina workers with their psychedelic disco act, complete with vibrant violet wigs, with one "mommy OFW" impressing the audience with her stylish dance moves. Another duo of OFWs made a memorable entrance with their gymnastics-inspired routine.
However, it was the captivating and humorous dance routine of a group of Filipino workers that truly stole the show in Taiwan. Infusing a touch of nostalgia, OFW fathers expressed their yearning for their families in the Philippines through a basketball match.
The Friendship Basketball Game between the Philippines and Taiwan (MECO and Taiwan NTC) at Banqiao Gymnasium resonated with cheers from the Filipino attendees.
Participating in the game were MECO staff and employees in Taiwan, whose muses and fellow OFWs delighted the crowd with entertaining TikTok moves before the intense basketball match.
MECO data reveals approximately 154,000 OFWs in Taiwan, many of whom are employed in semiconductor companies as factory workers. Despite the distance from their families, a simple "Happy Father's Day" greeting brings solace to the OFWs.
"Celebrating Father's Day far from your family is tough, but knowing that you can provide for them while working abroad brings comfort," said Ronald.
One fortunate OFW, Joffel, had his spouse and two children accompany him on vacation in Taiwan. It had been two years since he last saw his youngest child, Jabari Pious, and he expressed his joy at finally being reunited with his family after a prolonged separation.
The guest performer was Asia's Limitless Star, Julie Anne San Jose, who made her Taiwan debut. Bringing joy to the OFWs there was especially apt, especially given her father's previous work as an OFW in Taiwan. "It's fitting that today is Father's Day, a lovely way to commemorate it. Seeing such celebrations among Filipinos warms the heart," she said.
MECO foresees a rise in OFWs in Taiwan due to the demand not only for factory workers but also for professionals with diverse skills.
Silvestre H. Bello III, Chairman and Resident Representative of MECO, Philippine Representative Office in Taiwan, highlighted the dedication and hard work of Filipino workers in Taiwan, which, along with the competitive benefits offered by the country, positions it as a favorable destination for Filipinos seeking job opportunities. — BM, GMA Integrated News
