Marcos, Luxon eye review of PH-New Zealand deal on migrant workers

The Philippines and New Zealand are looking to review existing bilateral migrant worker arrangements for the recruitment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

According to the Presidential Communications Office, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon discussed the existing relationship between the two countries during the Luxon’s visit to the country.

“The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation regarding the welfare of migrant workers, particularly Filipino nurses,” Marcos and Luxon's joint statement said.

“Both leaders looked forward to the review of the existing bilateral migrant worker arrangement, which will facilitate the recruitment of Filipino workers to New Zealand and other initiatives,” it added.

The PCO said the leaders "acknowledged their mutual desire to strengthen the relationship between the Philippines and New Zealand and to lift the relationship in ways that deliver real benefits and advance our shared security and economic interests.”

Luxon also acknowledged the contribution of Filipinos to New Zealand’s economy by filling up gaps missing in the local workforce.

The two leaders have agreed to improve the countries’ collaborative efforts in ensuring the welfare of Filipino migrant workers, particularly Filipino nurses. —NB, GMA Integrated News
