DMW: OFW hurt in Hong Kong fire

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) got injured in a fire incident that occurred in a residential building in Hong Kong's Kowloon district, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Wednesday.

DMW officer-in-charge Hans Leo Cacdac said the Filipino only sustained minor injuries and is already receiving necessary assistance based on the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

In a separate statement, the agency said the victim was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for his right hand, which suffered from splinters after he broke a glass door to avoid suffocating from smoke.

He is now in stable condition and will be staying in the hospital for further treatment.

A total of five people were killed, while 35 others were injured, in the Kowloon fire, according to a Reuters report.

Around 150 people inside the 16-storey residential building were also evacuated to safety, while 40 individuals were sent to public hospitals.

At least six of the injured were also reported to be in serious condition, with one critical, according to the hospital authority.

The DMW said it would continue to monitor developments on the incident. — Giselle Ombay, Jiselle Anne Casucian/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
