Cacdac wants seasonal workers in Korea to go through DMW
Following complaints from Filipinos working as seasonal workers in Korea, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) officer-in-charge Hans Leo Cacdac on Friday said he wants them to be processed by the agency.
In a briefing, Cacdac said the DMW received around 40 complaints particularly about working conditions and unpaid salaries.
“Ang napansin namin, it would really help kung na-document sila ng DMW kasi mas mamo-monitor natin, unang-una, ‘yung kanilang sitwasyon,” he said.
(We noticed that it would really help if they were documented by the DMW because we can monitor them and their situation.)
“And just as important, mas matataguyod natin ‘yung kontrata nila if it will be processed by the DMW, certified, uh, verified by our post, ating labor attache on the post… mas pwedeng kausapin ‘yung local government counterpart in charge ng ating labor attache doon” he added.
(Just as important, we would be able to fight for their contracts if they are processed by the DMW, verified by our post, our labor attache at the post. We can talk to the local government counterparts in charge there.)
Cacdac explained that seasonal workers are deployed through local government units (LGUs) instead of the DMW.
“Ang nangyayari parang may LGU arrangement with another LGU in Korea and then may deployments under that arrangement,” he said.
(What is happening is there is an LGU arrangement with another LGU in Korea and then there are deployments under that arrangement.)
“The bottom line here is gusto natin ‘yung seasonal workers in Korea dumaan sa DMW. Of course, we’re not constraining the LGUs, the respective LGUs to talk to their counterparts in Korea. However, ang gusto sana natin ay ma-process sila sa DMW thereafter,” he later added.
