VP Sara caps Korea visit with meeting with OFWs

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Thursday capped her official visit to South Korea by meeting Filipino workers there where she saluted them for their "sacrifices and hard work."

"Nagpapasalamat po ako sa inyo dahil naitataas niyo ang bandera ng Pilipinas sa ibang bansa. And it makes us proud na naririnig namin sa mga dayuhan ang appreciation nila sa mga trabaho ninyo," Duterte told the all-Filipino gathering in Seoul.

(I thank all of you for making the Philippines proud in other countries. And it makes us proud to hear how foreigners appreciate your work.)

According to the Vice President, the over 57,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in South Korea strengthen the relationship, cooperation, and good relations between the two countries.

According to a statement from the Office of the Vice President (OVP), the Filipino workers whom Duterte met felt "honored" since it was the first time that a vice president made time to visit them.

"Nagpapasalamat kami kay Ma'am Sara dahil sa kabila ng busy schedule niya, binigyan niya kami ng oras para ma-meet," the OVP statement quoted 39-year-old Jackie, one of the OFWs, as saying.

In her official visit to South Korea, Duterte attended the Global Education and Innovation Summit (GEIS) where she served as one of its keynote speakers upon the invitation of the South Korean government.

In her speech delivered Thursday, Duterte said the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) will result in a paradigm shift in education, paving the way for both opportunities and uncertainties.

"We now live in an era where undeniably, technology must be harnessed to improve access, quality and equality in education. And the advent of artificial intelligence will certainly create another paradigm shift in education," she said.

"While this possibility will present newer and greater opportunities, it will also present many uncertainties in our vision of digital education,” Duterte added.

During her stay, Duterte also met with Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister His Excellency Ju-ho Lee and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo where they discussed the country's bilateral ties with South Korea. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
