DFA: Some Pinoys in Morocco refused to return to apartments due to aftershocks

Some Filipinos in Morocco refused to go back to their apartments out of fear of aftershocks following the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit the country, an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Friday.

At a public briefing, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said that a team was sent to address the situation of less than 20 Filipinos who were earlier reported to have no place to sleep.

"Ang problema hindi pala walang matulugan, ayaw lang nila bumalik sa apartment nila kasi may aftershocks pa. Kinakabahan sila so binigyan silang food supplies," De Vega said.

(The problem is that they don't want to return to their apartments due to the aftershocks. They were nervous so they were given food supplies.)

De Vega said that there was no Filipino casualty in the powerful earthquake that jolted Morocco. At least 2,900 individuals were killed in the quake.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) earlier said that around 350 to 400 Filipinos in Morocco might have been affected by the quake.

The DMW said that authorities, through the Philippine Embassy in Rabat, have sent basic necessities such as food and water to those in need. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
