Police investigation showed that Rondez was on his way home from work, and was heading to the train station when he was randomly attacked by a beggar, LAPD police later identified as Gerson Carillo Torres, 22.

With no apparent reason or provocation, Torres strangled Rondez strongly and did not let go until the victim dropped with his head hitting hard on the sidewalk.

Rondez failed to get up as he sprawled on the pavement. He was unconscious when the police arrived. He was rushed to  a hospital. But he succumbed to his injury the following day.

LAPD operatives have arrested Torres, but have not released details as to the possible motive for the attack. An LA court has recommended $2 million bail bond for suspect's temporary freedom.

Rondez is survived by his three children and five grandchildren. The Rondez family said their father had worked for three decades at the LA water and power firm. He was long past the retirement age, but decided to remain working to help his family back home. —LBG, GMA News
