Pinoys, foreigners flock to first Filipino carinderia in UK
For introducing mouth-watering Filipino food and delicacies, a Filipino-owned carinderia (eatery) in Nottingham, United Kingdom, is starting to gain popularity even among foreigners.
The eatery, A&J Karinderia, is located inside Victoria Centre, a popular mall in Nottingham, according to a report on GMA News TV's “News To Go” on Tuesday morning.
The eatery, owned by Ofelia Hutchinson, a taxi operator in the Philippines before moving to the UK, boasts of a variety of Filipino dishes and viands, the report said.
“Iba-ibang putahe araw-araw po. Ang pagkaing (binebenta) ko po hindi lang po sa Pilipino sa banyaga rin po,” Hutchinson said.
Among the place's bestsellers are the afritadang manok (chicken cooked in tomato-based sauce) and pansit (noodle dish). A meal consisting of a bowl of rice and two viands costs roughly P280.
Among the eatery's regular customers is Frank Barbajo, a Filipino. “Madalas kami pumapasyal dito. At tsaka namimili kami diyan sa Filipino store,” he said in the report.
Another satisfied customer is British national Michael Hill, who said he is a fan of Filipino food.
“I love Filipino food. I love kare-kare and pansit and some of the names I can't remember but they're very, very tasty I can recommend it,” Hill said.
Prior to her eatery, Hutchinson opened a Filipino grocery that caters mostly to Asians. — Andrei Medina/KBK, GMA News
