Now tumor-free, hero dog Kabang moves to next treatment

Philippine hero dog “Kabang” is now on her second stage of treatment after her tumor was determined by her doctors at the University of California–Davis to be completely gone. “Kabang was given a physical examination yesterday that showed no signs of the tumor, so she was able to start her heartworm treatment,” a Facebook post of the group “Care for Kabang” group said on Thursday. The group is an organization that raises funds for the treatment of Kabang who became internationally known for heroically saving two young girls from being run over by a speeding motorcycle. Kabang paid a high price for saving the girls, losing her upper snout and jaw after it got mangled in the front wheel of the motorcycle. The hero dog was then flown to the United States to undergo a reconstructive facial surgery. However, initial tests show that she had vaginal tumor and heartworm which needed to be addressed first. Kabang underwent a total of six chemotherapy sessions. When her tumor was completely gone, she was given the green light to get heartworm treatment which consists of a deep injection of a drug called Immiticide. Before Kabang was injected with the drug, she was given an Intravenous shot of Caprofen to suppress the side effects of Immiticide. Her doctors say that “she took the treatment well” and will be on bed rest for four to six weeks until the next heartworm session. - Andrei Medina, VVP, GMA News
